SAN LUIS OBISPO – San Luis Obispo electrical contractor Electricraft has been selected to help with the construction and electrical detail of the new terminal at the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport.
In 2013, San Luis Obispo County supervisors authorized the completion of a design for a new passenger terminal at the San Luis Obispo Regional Airport. Supervisors held a wide-ranging discussion of the future of the airport, including the passenger terminal which was described as “functional, but too small.” The Board of Supervisors estimated this project would cost roughly $25 million, with $1 million alone going towards planning and design.
With an uncertain budget for the 5 years to come, it was previously undetermined whether or not the project would move forward. Some supervisors argued that new terminals produced moderate to low benefit for the airport, others agreed that a new terminal would be needed if the airport is to expand its services as requested by the business community, who wanted a route to Denver established.
In 2015, the construction of the new passenger terminal was approved. Citing the importance of the airport to the area’s tourism and business industries, the SLO County Board of Supervisors unanimously gave final approval to the construction of the project, with an estimated cost of $35.4 million. Groundbreaking on the terminal began mid-October and is expected to take about 18 months to complete.

The terminal, estimated to be completed within the coming years, has been 17 years in the planning. The need for a new terminal was first identified in 1998, however plans to build a new facility grinded to a halt in 2008 due to the recession. The economy has now picked up enough for the new facility to be warranted. “This is long overdue, and I think we are headed in the right direction,” says Frank Mecham of the SLO County Board of Supervisors.
